On August 4th, the newly-rise director Wang Xuebo brings his maiden work Knife in the Clear Water to Qingdao. As a film that won the New Currents Award in the main competition of the 21st Pusan International Film Festival, the film has obtained good comments from the audience.
Knife in the Clear Water is a short story written by Shi Shuqing. It tells a story about a son who prepares to slaughter the only cow to hold a memorial ceremony for his mother in the 40th day after the old lady of Hui nationality passed away.
According to Wang Xuebo, in 2007, when he was in college, his schoolmate recommended the novel to him.He was deeply touched. Discussing the death of human through the story of a cow is quite special for him. So he shot a 20-minute short film about it at that time.
“However, I think the story should be more than a just short film. So I adapted it into a long story in 2010.” Wang Xuebosaid in order to shoot the film, he lived in Ningxia for 10 months. However, he failed to accomplish the film due to various reasons.
Knife in the Clear Water is an art film about an ethnic minority and their religious belief. Will it look good when it comes to box office? Wang Xuebo said that he would not worry about that question. He told the reporter that he would continue to shoot “films that touch my own heart”.
